Environmental Social Governance

ESG sits at the heart of our business

What does ESG mean?

ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance, and refers to the sustainability and ethical impact of a company’s operations, measured by using a set of criteria. Globally, we are yet to agree to using a common set of criteria. However, there is a consensus that ESG is an assessment of the company’s impact on:
Environment
This includes its use of natural resources, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste management
Social
This covers work practices, community engagement, customer relations, supply chain management, human rights.
Governance
This means evaluating the quality and effectiveness of a company’s management and governance structures, via criteria like board composition, compensation, transparency, accountability.

Performance

Research demonstrates that companies that perform well on ESG criteria are seen as more sustainable, responsible and resilient in the long term. For example, several studies conducted on the impact of ESG factors on financial performance found that companies with high ESG performance had higher stock return, are more likely to be well managed, innovative, sustainable and are less volatile than those with lower ESG performance.

Sustainable development goals

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals adopted to promote sustainable development and address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation.

The staff were generous, offering both our student and us their time and expertise in a friendly and encouraging manner. We are ambitious for out students to secure further placements with Smart CT in the future and to embark on apprenticeships when leaving the Sixth Form.” – Mrs Carly Collett, Head of Sixth Form, St. Crispin’s School
